Research shows that children are at risk of learning that violence is an acceptable means of conflict resolution when violence is glamourised, performed by an attractive hero, successful, has few real life consequences, is set in a comic context and / or is mostly perpetrated by male characters with female victims, or by one race against another. When at last the flood fills the valley, the newly formed family must join together and use their different strengths to save each other. They must also battle with their own fears, with Manny contemplating the possible extinction of his species, Diego combating his fear of water and Sid struggling to find his place and role in the ‘herd’.
